Money vs. Family

In Babette's Feast, the two sisters seem very happy helping others and showing how much they care. They seem so involved in helping others that they dont even consider helping themselves or starting a life of their own. By doing this they meet Babette and she eventually becomes someone very important in their family. When Babette wins the 10,000 francs, the sisters become somewhat upset because they realize that this means that their maid will more than likely return to France. It seems very odd to me that the sisters who always care about the well-being of others, are now only caring about themsleves. In other words, the sisters help others because it won't affect them, but now that Babette is doing better, they are not as happy because it is affecting them. If they truly cared about people then maybe they would have actually gotten happy for Babette when her life change so much. In the story, Babette seems to be the most helpful one out of all of them because she actually thinks about organizing the dinner for the sisters. Babette actually belives that living with the sister is more important than the money she just won and the the sisters believe completely the opposite.
