The writing in Bruce Catton's Grant & Lee: A Study In Contrast is a compare and contrast essay that explains the differences between the two civil war generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. Because if Catton's extensive history of the civil war he has a very good overview of these two generals. He shows his knowledge over these two generals by comparing them with each other. Catton does more then just compare the two generals he also uses historical facts about the war to back up his knowledge, he also gets into the meanings behind the facts by comparing and contrasting. He analyzes the facts of the war to go into great depth behind the generals.

Yes I agree a comparative essay essay can be difficult to write but the key is to organize it in such a way that gets your point across without much repetition. You can define one thing first, and then the other separately as long as you provide some form of analysis in between paragraphs and at the end in the manner of Catton.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Comparison and Contrast essays are VERY hard to write. I do like how Catton divides his essay into very specific, short paragraphs so its easy to keep up with. And its history! So its interesting to read! I think that you are also correct with saying that since he gives a lot of details it may also make it a lot more interesting.
